It is said that Cat Island real estate was first developed by people from Nassau fleeing the pirates back in the 1600s. There were only a few families and they survived by living off the land and the sea. The island was originally named San Salvador but was changed later by Bahamian Parliament to Cat Island after the local buccaneer Joseph Catt. Later Loyalists from the Carolinas and Northeastern United States migrated to the beachfront peace and tranquility of this 70 mile Bahamian island.

Cat Island homes typically offer higher elevations, with the island being one of our most elevated, home to the actual highest point in The Bahamas, Mount Alvernia, at 206’. Cat Island is also home to magnificent beachfront properties, unspoiled, rustic and charming. Cat Island's rich history is evidenced by the remnants of some of the old manor homes built by the old American refugees. Cat Island is also well known as the childhood home of famous actor the late Sir Sidney Poitier, whose parents were from Cat Island but worked in the United States. Young Sidney was sent to Cat Island as a boy to be raised by his grandmother until just before his early teenage years.

Cat Island real estate consists of miles and miles of beachfront and waterfront property available on both sides of the island. The islands magnificent beaches can be seen as far as the eye can see, from some of the best hilltop real estate in the world. Elevations up to 200 feet offer 360 degree panoramas that go on for miles. Cat Island property is rich in history with many of the Loyalist manors still standing and places bearing historical names like Port Royal, Man O War Point, Hawks Nest, Cutlass Bay, Devil's Point, Castle Bluff and Freetown.

Cat Island homes are accessible by air with flights from Nassau into New Bight Airport in the south. Hawks Nest on the southeastern tip also offers a small private airstrip for guests of the Hawks Nest Club. Do not expect to find casinos, large resorts, well stocked food stores, pharmacies or specialty stores in Cat Island. The residents here live off the land and the sea. It is very difficult to get supplies shipped in on the local mail boat from Nassau. Cat Island accommodations include luxurious beachfront resorts like Fernandez Bay Village, Hawks Nest Club and Greenwood Beach Resort.
